Lake Elsinore Wins 40,000th Game In League History
July 28, 2010 - California League (CalL1) News Release
Port Hueneme, CA - It was a close game in Stockton Tuesday night as the Ports played the Lake Elsinore Storm in the 40,000th game in California League History. The game went to extra innings before Lake Elsinore's offense took over, scoring 8 runs in the top of the tenth inning to capture the victory 14-6.
The Ports led going into the top of the ninth by a run, but the Storm tied the game with an RBI single by Cole Figueroa. The game last night was one of 5 games in the Cal League. Any one of them could have been the 40,000th game, but the Ports' game finished at just the right time to be declared the landmark game. Cal League President, Charlie Blaney, was at the game in Stockton.
"I am so honored and proud to have been present and represent all the former Presidents, Executives, Players, Managers, Coaches, and Umpires who have been a part of the great California League since its inception in 1941." Blaney said. "It was quite a thrill."
In other news, Henley Jansen became the latest former Cal Leaguer to debut in the Major Leagues. Jansen, a native of Curacao, started the year in the Cal League as part of the Inland Empire 66ers. He quickly earned a promotion to Double-A and from there, made the leap to the Big Leagues. He is the 2,196th player from the Cal League to play in the Big Leagues and the 89th player from Inland Empire.
Jansen, a 6'6'' hard throwing right handed pitcher, was originally signed as a 17 year old catcher but was converted last year after producing a batting average of .202 for the 66ers last year. He even played in the 2009 World Baseball Classic for the Netherlands as a catcher and had a big role in their victory over the Dominican Republic.
In his debut, Jansen faced the heart of the New York Mets order and was able to strike out David Wright and get Carlos Beltran to ground out on his way to a scoreless inning. He then came in the next day and got his first Big League save against the same Mets.
The California League regular season continues until Labor Day, September 6.
