Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Dillon Baird drove in the tying run in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the eighth, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rallied for a 4-3 win over the San Jose Giants, on Tuesday night at The Epicenter.

Baird's sac fly in the sixth inning scored Mike Trout to even the game at 2-2, while his double off the top of the wall plated Alberto Rosario in the eighth inning, putting the Quakes ahead to stay.

Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Rosario led off the inning with a single to left off San Jose reliever Scott Nestor (2-3). Nestor attempted to pick Rosario off of first, but fired wildly, allowing Rosario to move from first to third with no outs. Looking for a second potential sac fly, Baird did more than that, nearly leaving the ballpark with a drive off the top of the wall in left-center. Rosario would score on the double, as the Quakes took a 3-2 lead. Rian Kiniry was called upon to pinch run for Baird and immediately stole third base. Two batters later, Luis Jimenez delivered a sac fly to score Kiniry, putting the Quakes up by two at 4-2.

They'd need that extra run, as Quakes' closer Eddie McKiernan had some difficulty shutting the door in the ninth. McKiernan gave up a solo home run to Johnny Monell, his second of the night and 13th of the year, pulling the Giants to within a run at 3-2. With two outs, San Jose's Wendell Fairly reached on a bad-hop single. McKiernan then walked Drew Biery, putting the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. McKiernan settled down though, getting Jose Flores to ground to Darwin Perez at shortstop, with Perez getting the force on Biery to end the game and give McKiernan his 20th save in 22 chances this year.

The Quakes took the early lead on Giants' starter Kyle Woodruff, as Jimenez scored a run in the second inning, as Angel Castillo got hung up between first and second. Castillo stayed alive in the run-down long enough for Jimenez to score, giving the Quakes the 1-0 advantage.

Monell's first of two homers, a two-run shot in the fourth off Quakes' starter Manaurys Correa, put the Giants in front at 2-1.

The Quakes got even in the sixth, as Woodruff issued a lead-off walk to Mike Trout, who later scored on Baird's sac fly.

Christian Scholl (2-1) struck out five of seven batters over two scoreless innings to net the win.

Correa pitched well in the no-decision, giving up two runs on six hits over six innings.

The Quakes move to 18-14 in the second half and remain in first place in the South Division. Rancho Cucamonga will look to make it two in a row on Wednesday, sending Manny Flores (4-6) to the mound, opposite San Jose righthander Kyle Nicholson (6-8) at 7:05pm.
