Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (June 2nd, 2013) -- The Nuts took a 3-2 lead into the top of the eighth inning but the Mavericks rallied to take a 4-3 advantage, and held on from there for the victory on Sunday afternoon at John Thurman Field.
Nelson Gonzalez (1-3) recorded two quick outs to start the eighth, but gave up a single to Ji-Man Choi to continue the inning. Jabari Blash followed with an RBI double off the fence in left-center to tie the game, and promptly scored on an infield hit from Kevin Rivers to give High Desert the lead. Gonzalez, who had worked 10 2/3 scoreless coming into the outing, was saddled with his third loss of the year.
Domonic Leone struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win for the Mavericks, earning his fourth save of the year.
Modesto broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by Jared Simon, his first in a Nuts uniform. George Mieses (2-2), who served up the homer, became the winning pitcher after the Mavericks rally in the next half inning. He also got the first two outs in the eighth before handing things off to Leone, who would strike out all four batters that he faced.
The game started as a pitcher's duel between Modesto's Chris Jensen and High Desert's Brett Shankin. The two teams combined for only one hit, a bloop double by Choi in the first four innings.
High Desert struck first in the game as Daniel Paolini hit a line-drive 2-run homer that just cleared the fence near the left-field foul pole to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
Modesto responded immediately to tie the game back up as Simon would bring home Harold Riggins on a sac-fly and Drew Beuerlein would come up with a big two-out RBI double to knot it up at two.
Jensen, who led the team with a 1.67 ERA in May, turned in another good start allowing just two earned on four hits in six innings of work. The 22-year-old had a scoreless inning streak of 16 snapped by Paolini's home run.
After splitting the four-game series against the Mavericks, the Nuts will continue at home against the San Jose Giants. A three-game series starts on Monday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Ben Alsup (3-5, 4.68) will pitch for Modesto, facing Giants RHP Jason Forjet (1-0, 3.00).
