Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA (June 1st, 2013) -- Modesto opened the month of June with another terrific effort from their pitching staff, as they would limit the Mavericks to only a run and two hits in a 3-1 victory on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.

The Nuts would start and finish the game by retiring 11 in a row, starting with Tyler Gagnon who was perfect until issuing a two-out walk in the fourth. Gagnon (5-3), who would last seven strong innings, turned in his best start of the year to pick up his fourth consecutive win.

Closer Scott Oberg retired the side in order in the 9th for his second save in as many nights, and his 12th of the season.

Modesto struck first in the game against Mavs starter Cam Hobson, as Kyle Von Tungeln and David Kandilas opened the third with back-to-back doubles. Three batters later, Harold Riggins made it 2-0 with an RBI single.

Ryan Casteel doubled in the fifth, and Will Swanner brought him home with two outs in the inning on a double of his own. All nine players in the Nuts order managed at least one hit in the game.

Hobson (3-4) would exit in the fifth after giving up the double to Swanner, and was saddled with the loss.

High Desert got their only run in the top of the sixth as Dillon Hazlett tripled and scored on a sac-fly by Chris Taylor.

Gagnon finished his night retiring his last four in a row, and Kraig Sitton worked a perfect eighth before Oberg finished things off in the ninth.

The Mavericks, who came in with the second best offensive in the league at the start of the series, have been limited to one run and two hits in each of their last two games.

Modesto will now go for the series win, with an afternoon game set for Sunday at 1:05 p.m. RHP Chris Jensen (2-4, 2.89) will take the hill, opposite recently demoted RHP Brett Shankin (1-1, 2.61).
