Kansas City Mavericks News Release

BRAMPTON, Ontario. - The Missouri Mavericks found themselves in another back-and-forth battle with the Brampton Beast on Sunday afternoon. Just like Friday night the teams were deadlocked after 65 minutes of play and took a sudden-death shootout to decide the winner. Brampton won the breakaway contest 1-0 and claimed a 4-3 win. Missouri's record sits at 2-4-1 at the end of the October schedule.

The Mavericks and Beast kept the scorekeepers busy on Friday night by combining for six first-period goals, but on Sunday afternoon it was a different story. Reigning ECHL Goalie of the Year, Josh Robinson (7), and touted Montreal Canadiens prospect Zach Fucale (9) combined for 16 saves in the opening stanza and left the game scoreless headed into the second period. The Mavericks found their best offensive traction late in the first when Brandon MacLean picked up a double minor for high-sticking. Missouri had several quality scoring chances, including a shot that rang off the crossbar, but couldn't solve the Beast goalie. A late Brampton penalty sent the Mavericks to the second period with 1:03 of power play time.

Special teams play was prevalent in the second period as the Mavericks (2) and Beast (5) combined for seven minor penalties. Missouri killed off both of Brampton's power plays and converted a power play goal at 12:04. Lukas Lofquist finished off a back-door feed from Dane Fox for his first professional goal, and Bryce Aneloski picked up his team-leading seventh point with the secondary assist. Lofquist's goal tied the game at one after Brampton's Yannick Veilleux tipped in a point shot at 8:05. Then, just 1:54 after the Mavericks tied it, Scott Jacklin converted a 3-on-2 rush for Brampton to reclaim the lead.

Missouri tried to author its second third-period comeback in as many games and nearly pulled it off. Dane Fox netted his second goal of the season by converting a 5-on-3 power play at 3:56 that tied the score. Jesse Graham followed just under six minutes later with a top-shelf goal from the right wing to put the Mavericks ahead for the first time in the game. It was Graham's first goal in a Mavericks sweater, but it couldn't hold up as the game winner. Brampton tied the score with a power play goal at 15:29 thanks to a point shot by Reggie Traccito.

In overtime the Mavericks were awarded a 4-on-3 power play but only registered one shot on the advantage and could not score on Fucale. Darren Nowick had a breakaway chance within the final minute of OT but was turned away with a pad save.

The Mavericks went 0-for-4 against Fucale in the shootout while Mike Vernace beat Robinson from the doorstep in the top of the fourth to give Brampton the win in its fifth straight overtime game to open the season.

Robinson stopped 19 of 22 shots through overtime and went 3-for-4 in the shootout. The Mavericks were 2-for-10 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Mavericks return to home ice on Saturday, November 5 at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers.
