Mavericks Hang on for 5-4 Victory Over Lake Elsinore

August 30, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavs got some power at the plate from some unlikely sources and survived a bases loaded, none out jam in the ninth to hang on and beat Lake Elsinore 5-4 Sunday evening.

Despite controlling most of the game, the Mavs could never put away the Storm and led by just one heading into the ninth.

Instead of going to Brian Moran, the Mavs turned the ball over to Daniel Cooper to close the game. Cooper walked Cody Decker, gave up a single to Allan Dykstra, and then walked Rymer Liriano to load the bases.

Jesus Lopez came up next and sent a ground ball right to Shaver Hansen at third base. Hansen threw home, and Trevor Coleman fired to first to complete the double play.

Cooper then got Ali Solis to ground out to end the game, as Cooper earned his first save with the Mavs.

The game felt like the Mavericks were ahead by a lot more given how they seemingly outplayed Lake Elsinore all day.

An error by the Storm's Vince Belnome in the first inning came back to hurt Lake Elsinore, as Jake Shaffer collected a two-out RBI triple to open the scoring.

The Storm tied the game in the second when Decker led off the inning with a home run.

Coleman provided some power for the Mavs in the fourth when his two-run homer put the Mavs in the lead for good.

Edilio Colina then homered in the fifth, a deep drive that just stayed fair down the left field line to make it 4-1.

After Andrew Carraway retired the first two men of the sixth, Belnome singled and Decker went deep once again to pull the Storm within one.

The Mavs responded in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Colina singled to bring home one run, although Coleman was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Storm got another two-out homer in the seventh, this time by Solis to make it one-run game again.

Despite allowing three homers, Carraway (11-7) pitched very well, giving the Mavs seven solid innings. He allowed four runs and five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Lake Elsinore pitcher Rob Musgrave had trouble with the Mavs once again. Musgrave (3-4) allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings. He struck out six with no walks.

The Mavs will look to notch a win in their final regular season home game when they face the Storm at 7:05 p.m. Monday. It's the final Ebmeyer Charter Munchie Monday, with hamburgers, nachos, and sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
