San Jose Giants News Release
Francisco Peguero and Jose Flores drove home three runs each while the Giants scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead before cruising to a 7-2 victory over the Stockton Ports on Sunday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Kyle Woodruff tossed six effective innings to pick-up the win as San Jose snapped a four-game losing streak. The victory improves the Giants' record to 71-61 - two games ahead of Stockton (69-63) for the top overall mark in the North Division. Eight games remain in the regular season.
Flores (3-for-5, 3B, 3 RBI, SB) smacked a key run-scoring triple to tie the game in the sixth inning while Peguero (2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) hit a bases-loaded, two-run double during the pivotal seventh-inning rally. Ehire Adrianza (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, SB) added a pair of hits for the Giants.
Woodruff (3-2) scattered eight hits and allowed two runs (both earned) during his stint on the mound. The San Jose starter struck out four and walked two. Brian Anderson (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO) and Jason Stoffel (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) combined for three hitless innings out of the bullpen to finish the game.
Trailing by a 2-1 score, Peguero started the sixth-inning rally with a one-out infield single to shortstop. On the play, Ports shortstop Grant Green threw wildly to first for an error as Peguero easily raced into third. Flores followed with a line drive triple into the right field corner plating Peguero to tie the game. The Giants though were unable to take the lead as Charlie Culberson lined out to second and Michael Sandoval grounded out to keep the score tied.
San Jose then sent all nine hitters to the plate in the seventh as consecutive walks to James Simmons and Drew Biery started the frame. Joel Weeks then lined a single into left center to load the bases before Adrianza delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right putting the Giants in front. After Wendell Fairley was hit by a pitch to again load the bases, Peguero stepped to the plate and hammered a double off the fence in straightaway center scoring both Biery and Weeks to make it 5-2. Flores then hit a soft ground ball to third with Fairley scoring on the play when he beat the throw home from third baseman Brandon Pinckney.
The Giants extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the ninth as Adrianza led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on Fairley's groundout and scored when Peguero grounded out.
Stockton initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Green smacked a solo homer to deep center off of Woodruff.
San Jose drew even in the top of the fourth as Adrianza started the inning with a double to deep right - the Giants' first hit of the contest. Fairley was then hit by a pitch before Peguero grounded out to advance the runners to second and third and then an infield single from Flores scored the run.
The Ports reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Kent Walton's one-out, RBI single, but Woodruff induced the next hitter, Dusty Napoleon, to bounce into an inning-ending double play. Stockton then loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, however Woodruff pitched out of trouble when Mike Spina popped out to first before Jeremy Barfield flied out to shallow left.
The Ports then had a pair of baserunners thrown out at second attempting to steal in the bottom of the sixth as the score remained tied. Anderson entered the game to begin the bottom of the seventh and worked around two-out walks in each of his innings. Stoffel followed with a scoreless ninth to finish the game.
