High Desert Mavericks News Release

In a ballpark that plays like Mavericks Stadium, the Mavericks played another game on the road that resembled a home performance as they fell 9-4 Saturday night in Stockton.

The game got off to a good start for the Mavs, as Eddy Martinez- Esteve hit a two-run homer in the first to give the Mavs the early lead.

The lead didn't last very long, as Jermaine Mitchell and Grant Green hit back-to-back home runs to start the bottom of the first inning and tie the game.

The Ports took the lead in the second. Todd Johnson drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a sac fly by Green. Tyler Ladendorf laced an RBI double the next inning to make it 4-2.

Martinez-Esteve came through for the Mavs once again with two outs the fifth, collecting a two-out RBI single to get the Mavs within one.

However, the Mavs issued another leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth to Ladendorf. He would end up scoring on a double play to put Stockton ahead 5-3.

Things went really south for the Mavs in the bottom of the seventh. They committed three errors, issued two walks, had a wild pitch and passed ball as the Ports scored three more times to seize control of the game. Stephen Parker did hit an RBI double to score the first run, but the other two both scored on errors.

The Ports added one for good measure in the eighth as another run scored on a double play in the eighth.

The Mavs didn't put up much of a fight in the ninth, but Martinez- Esteve managed to hit another RBI double. He finished 3-for-4 and drove in all four Maverick runs.

For the second straight night, the Mavs failed to get a solid outing from their starting pitcher. Andrew Carraway had his run of five straight quality starts come to an end, allowing four runs over five innings. Carraway (8-6) walked three for a second straight start and struck out only two.

The Ports leaned on their bullpen for most of the night after Brett Tomko could last just 3.1 innings. Mike Hart (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run in 1.2 innings.

The Mavs now must avoid being swept when they face Ports Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
