Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Clay Fuller drove in the game-tying run in the seventh and then singled in the game-winner in the ninth, as the Quakes rallied from a four-run deficit, defeating the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 6-5 on Saturday night at The Epicenter.
Fuller completed a four-hit game, singling home Alberto Rosario with the game-winning run and helping the Quakes climb back into a first-place tie with the High Desert Mavericks atop the South Division.
Rosario got the rally started with a one-out single to left field, off of Inland Empire reliever Eric Krebbs (0-1). Luis Jimenez followed with a bloop-single to right, as Rosario went from first to third. After Jimenez stole second, Gabe Jacobo took the count to 2-1, before being intentionally walked. With the bases loaded, Fuller chopped a 3-2 pitch off the glove of Garcia at third base, scoring Rosario with the winning run.
Quakes' starter Garrett Richards struggled in his first home start, as the first four Inland Empire hitters to bat in the first inning all scored. After singles by Alfredo Silverio and Chris Gutierrez opened the inning, Scott Van Slyke popped a three-run homer, his seventh of the year to make it 3-0. Dustin Yount followed with a solo homer, his first, putting the 66ers in front 4-0.
The Quakes got a run back in the first inning, as Dodgers' reliever Ronald Belisario started and worked one inning as part of a rehab assignment. Mike Trout singled to open the inning and eventually scored from third on a Jimenez sac fly to center field, making it a 4-1 game.
Garcia made it a 5-1 game in the fourth, as he took Richards over the right-field wall for his first homer of the year.
Inland Empire's JonMichael Redding got touched for three runs in the fourth, as the Quakes pulled to within a run. Jacobo walked to open the inning, then moved to second on Fuller's bunt single. Dillon Baird followed with a run-scoring single, making it 5-2. Eric Oliver then brought home Fuller with an RBI hit, his second of three hits on the night, making it a 5-3 game. Trout came up with a two-out single, plating Oliver to take the deficit down to one at 5-4.
It remained 5-4 until Fuller tied the game with a sharp one-hop liner off the glove of Gutierrez at short. On the play, Jimenez scored from third, tying the game at 5-5.
Nick Pugliese (3-4) worked two scoreless innings for the win.
Richards allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings in the no-decision.
The win for the Quakes (22-18, 62-50), coupled with High Desert's loss at Stockton, moves the Quakes into a first-place tie with the Mavs atop the South Division.
Rancho Cucamonga looks for the sweep on Sunday evening, sending Matt Shoemaker (7-7) to the mound against Inland Empire lefty Aaron Miller (2-4). Game time for Sunday's series-finale is 5:05pm.
