San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants exploded for 11 runs - all with two outs - in the top of the first inning en route to a 15-6 thrashing of the Bakersfield Blaze on Saturday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Francisco Peguero and Johnny Monell each homered in San Jose's highest-scoring inning of the season while the Giants finished the contest with 17 hits. The victory improves San Jose's overall record to 63-49.
Peguero (3-for-6, HR, 4 RBI) drove home four runs to lead the Giants offensive attack. Monell (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), Charlie Culberson (2- for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and James Simmons (2-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) each connected for home runs while Jose Flores (3-for-6, RBI) added three hits. The Giants sent 15 batters to the plate during the opening inning while knocking out nine hits and taking advantage of two Blaze errors.
Peguero started the contest with a single and advanced to third on Flores' single into right field. Bakersfield starter Kennil Gomez then struck out Monell for the second out of the inning before the floodgates opened. Culberson was up next and he grounded a single into left field plating Peguero with the first run of the night. Michael Sandoval then reached on an infield single to shortstop and when Andres James' hurried throw to second in an attempt to force out Culberson sailed into foul territory down the right field line, two more runs scored for the Giants.
The rally continued when the next hitter, Ehire Adrianza, drew a walk before Simmons hammered a double down the left field line to plate Sandoval for a 4-0 lead. Matt Klimas, the ninth batter to hit, followed by reaching on a fielding error committed by James as Adrianza scored the fifth run of the inning. Peguero then smoked a line drive over the fence in left center field for a three-run homer and an 8-0 San Jose advantage.
The Giants though weren't finished as Wendell Fairley lined a double into right center before scoring on Flores' single. Yoon Hee Nam was then summoned from the Blaze bullpen and he promptly allowed a towering two-run homer down the right field line off the bat of Monell to make the score 11-0. Culberson followed by drawing a walk to mark the 10th consecutive San Jose batter to reach base, but Nam recovered to strikeout Sandoval finally ending the inning.
Gomez (4-8) suffered the loss for Bakersfield after surrendering 10 runs (four earned) on eight hits over 2/3 of an inning. He walked one and struck out one.
The Blaze climbed to within 11-4 with three runs in the bottom of the second before a single tally in the fourth. Facing Giants starter Kyle Woodruff, Cody Podraza delivered a two-out, two-run triple to deep right center field to get Bakersfield on the scoreboard. Erik Morrison followed with a single to plate Podraza with the third run of the frame.
Woodruff lasted only three innings as the right-hander surrendered three runs (all earned) on three hits. Woodruff walked four, struck out two and threw 75 pitches during his stint on the mound.
Eric Stolp relieved Woodruff to begin the bottom of the fourth and surrendered a one-out, RBI single to Miguel Velazquez. Chris McGuiness then drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases, but Stolp induced the next hitter, Mike Bianucci, to line into an inning-ending double play to first. Stolp allowed just one hit and one run during three innings of work, but the right-hander walked six and did not strikeout a batter.
San Jose increased their lead to 12-4 when Simmons belted a one-out, solo homer to deep left center in the top of the fifth. In the seventh, Flores singled with one out to load the bases while Klimas scored on the play when the right fielder Bianucci mishandled the ball for an error.
In the top of the eighth, a single from Adrianza followed by a pair of walks loaded the bases with none out. Peguero was then credited with his fourth RBI as he reached first on a fielding error committed by James - the third miscue of the night from the shortstop. Culberson capped the Giants scoring with a solo homer to left in the top of the ninth. The home run, Culberson's 15th of the year, extended the Giants lead to 15-4.
Ben Wilshire (1-0) earned his first win of the season after holding Bakersfield scoreless over the seventh and eighth innings. He surrendered two hits, walked none and struck out two. Dan Otero (1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the bottom of the ninth and allowed a two-run homer to Doug Hogan.
