Storm Rally Late to Snap JetHawks Win Streak

August 8, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(LAKE ELSINORE, CA) - For most of Sunday evening it looked like the JetHawks would win a seventh straight game and get to within two games of first place in the playoff race. But a series of defensive mistakes over the final three innings helped Lake Elsinore rally for a 5-2 win over Lancaster Sunday evening at the Diamond. The JetHawks win streak ends after getting victories in each of the first five games of the road trip.

They led through the opening and middle innings thanks to the strong pitching of Robert Donovan. In his best outing yet for the JetHawks, Donovan set a new career-high with nine strikeouts over six shutout innings. He left with Lancaster leading after John Curtis hit a solo home run in the second inning. Lee Cruz tripled home Brandon Barnes in the fifth to extend the lead to 2-0.

The wheels came off in the seventh. An error and a walk put the leadoff men on base. Jaff Decker tried to sacrifice bunt for the Storm, but while JetHawks pitcher Mike Modica fielded the ball cleanly, no JetHawks fielder covered first base, allowing all the runners to be safe. The Storm would cash in with three in the inning to take the lead, then took advantage of two more Lancaster miscues in the eighth inning to add two more runs.

Brad Brach closed out the ninth for his 37th save, tying the California League's single season record.

The JetHawks open a six-game homestand Monday night at the Hangar against the San Jose Giants. Kyle Greenwalt (5-6) will pitch for Lancaster against the Justin Fitzgerald (8-3) of San Jose. The game begins at 7:00 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. The Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45.

It will be a Feed Your Face Monday at the Hangar. Fans can purchase a game ticket, plus All-You-Can-Eat hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn, and peanuts for just $10.
