Allen Americans News Release
Allen Texas-The Allen Americans suffered their first home loss of the season, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Missouri Mavericks on Thursday at Allen Event Center.
Three-straight Missouri goals in the third period did the Americans in. Allen had taken a 2-1 lead at the beginning of the period before letting the lead slip away, despite playing well for most of the second half. A couple of mistakes came back to bite them and the puck just didn't bounce their way.
"We didn't give up. We made mistakes in the third but we outplayed them in the period," said head coach Steve Martinson. "We'll keep working on that. We have to learn from that. With all of our veteran guys we have to be able to shut things down with 10 minutes left in the game. But we'll bounce back. I liked our effort."
Missouri forward Sabastien Thinel made it 1-0 for the Mavericks 14 minutes into the game. Missouri outshot the Americans, 13-6, in the first before Allen got some momentum in the second.
Allen received back-to-back power plays in the middle of the second period but could not capitalize on them. Then Scotty Howes put in a rebound with 3:39 left in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Brett Skinner and Anthony Maiani earned assists.
The Americans outshot the Mavericks, 17-5, in the second period. The beginning of the third saw Tyler Ludwig give the Americans the lead with a shot that found the top right corner early in the third. Darryl Bootland and Howes had the assists.
But it was not to last.
Missouri came roaring back with two goals midway through the third to give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead. Jeff Pierce scored a power play goal for Missouri just 16 seconds into a power play and Brian Bicek found the back of the net just minutes later on a rush up the ice.
Bicek added an empty-net goal with one minute left and sealed the game, though Jamie Schaafsma scored a power play goal with 30 seconds left to make things interesting.
Aaron Dell stopped 24-of-27 shots in the loss.
