Kansas City Mavericks News Release
FORT WAYNE, INDIANA (February 24, 2016)- The Missouri Mavericks improved their league-leading record to 43-7-2-1 on Wednesday night, defeating the Fort Wayne Komets (29-16-4-1) by the score of 4-3. The two teams will drop the puck again on Friday night (7:00p.m. CST) at Memorial Coliseum in their second and final regular season match-up of the season.
The Mavericks controlled the pace of the game on Wednesday night, and though the Komets tested net-minder Parker Milner with 40 shots on goal through 60 minutes of regulation hockey, Missouri never let up on the momentum of the lead they acquired at the 13:11 mark of the first period when Andrew Courtney deflected the puck past Fort Wayne's Spencer Martin during a Mavericks power-play. Kellen Jones and Bryce Aneloski were credited with the helpers on Courtney's 17th goal of the season.
Fort Wayne tied the game at 17:48 when Kyle Thomas scored a five-hole shot on Milner from directly in front of the Mavericks net.
The Mavs took only 2 shots on goal during the second period, but the first of those shots was a goal by Kellen Jones just 40 seconds into the frame. Teammates Tyler Barnes and Jesse Root assisted on the quick play.
Once again the Komets were able to play catch-up and tie the game, 2-2, when Alex Belzile scored with a back-handed shot in front of the Missouri crease.
The Mavs made a big move in the third period, upping their score 4-2 over the Komets with back-to-back goals from Matt Finn and Jesse Root. Finn scored a power-play tally at 7:50 with a one-timer off a feed from Rocco Carzo (Zach Tolkinen was credited with the second assist), and Root made his 26th tally of the season for Missouri at 10:55 when he redirected a shot from the point past Martin. Matt Finn and Kellen Jones took the assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
Fort Wayne fought back onto the scoreboard with one last mark at 16:10 via Gabriel Beaupre, breathing new life into a frustrated home team. The Komets pulled Martin for an extra attacker and were awarded a 6-on-4 advantage in the final minute of the game when Trevor Ludwig was called for delay of game, but the Mavericks held strong around Milner to skate away with the 4-3 win.
The Missouri Mavericks play their next game on the road, facing-off Friday evening against the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:00p.m. (CST).
