Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - In their fourth game in five nights, the Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Rapid City Rush 9-2 Tuesday night at Independence Events Center. The Rush scored two in the first period, three in the second period, and four in the third to score the most goals against the Mavericks in a game this season. Brendon Hodge had a goal and three assists to lead the Rush, and eight different players scored goals. Simon Watson and Jeff MacDermid had goals for the Mavericks who fell to 8-11-1 on the season and remain in sixth place in the Northern Conference.
It was close for the first 35 minutes of the contest. Blaine Jarvis scored first for the Rush at the 10:03 mark, but the Mavericks answered on Simon Watson's second goal of the season. The power play goal for Watson marked the fourth straight game in which the Mavericks have scored a goal with the man advantage. Jon Pelle made it a 2-1 game with 3:30 left in the first period to give the Rush the lead heading into the intermission.
Jamie VanderVeeken gave the Rush a 3-1 lead on his third goal of the season at the 3:04 mark of the second. Missouri came back and made it a 3-2 game on a power play goal by Jeff MacDermid for his seventh goal of the season. All the momentum the Mavericks had quickly left as the Rush scored just four seconds later. They won the faceoff at center ice, and two passes later, Brendan Cook made it a two-goal lead and Rapid City never looked back. Scott Wray fired a slap shot with one second remaining in the second period that beat Mavericks' goaltender Doug Groenestege and gave the visitors a 5-2 lead heading into the third period.
It was all Rapid City in the final frame as Derek Campbell, Hodge, Wray and Luke Erickson scored goals including a penalty shot goal by Hodge that made the final score 9-2.
Rapid City finished with 38 shots compared to 30 for the Missouri. Both teams had a pair of power play goals each and Missouri had 49 penalty minutes in the contest.
The Mavericks travel to south Texas this weekend for a pair of games against Laredo and Corpus Christi. The Laredo Bucks host Missouri on Friday and the IceRays on Saturday. Missouri will play eight of their next 11 games on the road. The next home game is Tuesday, December 15 against the Rush at 7:05 p.m. For special ticket packages, call the Mavericks front office at (816) 252-7825, or call (866) 443-8849 for individual game tickets.
