High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavericks finally found some Mavericks Stadium mojo Thursday night, coming from behind in their final at bat to beat Visalia 10-7 on a walk-off grand slam by Johermyn Chavez.

After the Mavericks had erased a couple of earlier deficits, the game was tied 6-6 heading into the ninth. Alberto Diaz led off the inning with a double, and Chris Davis sacrificed him to third. Brent Greer then hit a sac fly to right to put the Rawhide in the lead.

The Rawhide turned to their All-Star closer Bryan Woodall to seal the win, but Woodall struggled for the second straight night.

Dennis Raben and Eddy Martinez-Esteve started the bottom of the ninth with base hits. Shaver Hansen was looking to put down a sac but drew a walk instead to load the bases.

Chavez, who had been 0 for his last 10, stepped up next and got down in the count 1-2. On the next pitch, he sent a towering fly ball out to left field for his first grand slam of the season, and the first walk-off home run by a Maverick this year.

It was the first home run surrendered by Woodall (5-3) this season. He had allowed four runs the entire season coming into Wednesday, but has given up eight the last two nights at Mavericks Stadium.

The Mavericks were fighting from behind all night and never led until Chavez's heroic homer.

Josh Ford and Alfredo Marte each hit solo homers for the Rawhide, giving them an early 2-0 lead. Maximo Mendez responded with a home run in the third to make it 2-1.

Ryan Wheeler hit a two-run, two-out single in the fourth to give Visalia a three-run lead.

Dennis Raben tied the game in the fifth with a three-run homer. Raben reached base all five times he came to the plate, collecting three hits and two walks.

The Rawhide broke the tie in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Paul Goldschmidt. Dan Kaczrowski then hit a two-out RBI single the next inning to make it 6-4.

The Mavs would tie the game once again the in seventh. Martinez- Esteve hit an RBI double, and Hansen provided a game-tying sac fly.

The Rawhide outhit the Mavs 15-12, and collected at least one hit every inning. They had the chance to put the game out of reach a few times, but went just 4-for-19 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

Maverick reliever Stephen Penney (4-2), who allowed his first earned run in over a month in the top of the ninth, was another benefactor of the grand slam, taking home the win.

The Mavs will look to win the series against the Rawhide and split their six-game home stand Friday night at 7:05 p.m. It's another Midway Home Solutions Family Feast Night, with all hot dogs and sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
