Quakes Roll With Another Shutout
July 9, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes shut out the Lancaster JetHawks for a second straight game, earning their league-leading seventh shutout of the year, in a 7-0 win on Thursday night at the Hangar.
Patrick Corbin, Jeremy Berg and Nick Pugliese combined on the four-hit shutout, as the Quakes have now worked 26 consecutive scoreless frames, dating back to Tuesday's win in High Desert.
Corbin (4-2) scattered three hits and a walk over six scoreless frames, earning his second straight win.
The offense gave Corbin some early support, as Angel Castillo blasted his first of two homers in the second, a two-run shot to put the Quakes ahead of Lancaster starter Patrick Urckfitz (4-3) at 2-0.
Gabe Jacobo unleashed his team-leading 11th home run of the year in the fourth, putting the Quakes in front 3-0.
The Lancaster bullpen struggled for a second straight night, as they surrendered four in the seventh, as the Quakes built a commanding 7-0 lead.
Edwin Walker surrendered a lead-off homer to Castillo to open the inning, his tenth of the year to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Kevin Ramos doubled down the left-field line. Jesus Campos followed with a bunt back to the hill. Walker fielded the bunt and threw out Campos at first base for the second out. However, first baseman David Flores apparently forgot that Ramos was on base, as he attempted to throw it around the horn. Instead, Flores sailed the throw into left field, allowing Ramos to come in and score an unearned run, making it 5-0. After Clay Fuller doubled, Alberto Rosario capped the four-run outburst with a two-run drive to left field, his second of the year to cap the scoring at 7-0.
Berg worked the seventh and eighth, before Pugliese pitched the scoreless ninth to end it.
The Quakes (9-6, 48-37) look for the series-sweep on Friday night, sending Ryan Chaffee (3-4) to the mound, opposite Lancaster right-hander Kyle Greenwalt (3-6). First pitch for the final game of the road trip is 7:00pm.
The Quakes return from the six-game road trip on Saturday night, opening up a three-game series against High Desert at The Epicenter. July 10th is Millennium Systems Fireworks Night, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Display, thanks to Millennium Systems and KOLA 99.9. Saturday night will also feature a special jersey auction, as the Quakes help to raise awareness for Autism. Proceeds of the jersey auction will benefit the Autism Society Inland Empire. Game time is 7:05pm and gates open at 6:05pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
