Mavericks Beat Sundogs, 7-2; Improve to 3-0-0

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Arizona Sundogs 7-2 Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center. Forward Dale Mahovsky had two goals and two assists and a total of five Mavericks had multiple points in the game as Missouri improved to 3-0-0 on the season. Goaltender Charlie Effinger continued his stellar play for the Mavericks as he stopped 49 of Arizona's 51 shots. The Mavericks won their third game in the month of October for the first time in the franchise's three-year history. The teams will battle again this Friday and Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center, and both games are scheduled for 9:05 p.m. central.

"The guys showed great composure going down 2-0," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "At intermission we asked them to take it shift by shift and it led to an early power play goal in the second intermission. All three lines really contributed tonight."

The Sundogs took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Jean-Philipp Chabot and Kyle Hood. Chabot took the lead on assists from Hood and Corey Toy, and Hood scored the first power play goal of the season against the Mavericks on a blast from above the left circle. Through one period, the Sundogs had a 15-9 lead in shots and a 2-0 lead through the first 20 minutes.

Missouri bounced back in a big way in the second period. Rookie forward Dale Mahovsky earned four points in the period as the Mavericks scored four unanswered goal in the second. Nathan O'Nabigon tallied the Mavericks' first goal at the 1:05 mark on Missouri's first of three power play goals of the game. Next, it was Andy Zulyniak who tucked in the puck just 13 seconds after the O'Nabigon goal. Mahovsky tallied assists on each of the first two goals and buried his next two shots to give the Mavericks a 4-2 lead. At the 9:17 mark, Mahovsky gave the Mavericks their first lead of the game at 3-2. Mahovsky then scored his second goal of the game and fourth point of the period at 18:36. Through two periods, the Mavericks held a 4-2 lead.

It was all Mavericks in the third period as Sebastien Thinel, Brandon Coccimiglio and Kris Hogg all scored. Despite being outshot 52-33, the Mavericks handily defeated the Sundogs 7-2. Tempers flared in the third as a total of eight fighting majors were doled out.

The Mavericks finished 3-for-3 on the power play and allowed just one goal on seven Sundogs' chances. Effinger improved his record to 3-0-0 between the pipes for the Mavericks and he has not allowed a goal outside of the first period in all three games.

The Mavericks and Sundogs will continue their three-game series with games on Friday and Saturday and the Mavericks will finish their season-long road trip on November 4 against the Wichita Thunder. The Mavericks home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Thunder. Missouri plays home games at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
