Philadelphia Union II News Release

Philadelphia Union have announced that midfielder Maurice Edu will make a rehab assignment with Bethlehem Steel FC this Sunday in Bethlehem. Edu is coming back from a stress fracture injury in his left leg that has kept him off the field thus far the entire 2016 season.

Edu, 30, originally joined the Union prior to the 2014 season. After signing a multi-year extension in 2015, the defensive midfielder is entering his third year with the club in 2016. He's played in 53 league games with the Union and scored four goals. He's also added two goals in U.S. Open Cup play, including one in the 2014 Final against Seattle Sounders.

"Mo is obviously an important part of our team and this is another good step in his progression." Said Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin

Edu, a former No. 1 pick in the 2007 MLS Draft by Toronto has appeared in 91 MLS matches, 53 of those have been with Philadelphia Union. At the international level Edu has appeared in 46 games for the United States National Team and has scored one goal. He was a member of the 2010 World Cup team that advanced to the knockout round. There, he famously had a goal disallowed during a match in group play against Slovenia. He was also included in the 2008 Summer Olympics and played three games as center back.

Edu will make his first appearance with Steel FC at Goodman Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 4, when they face New York Red Bulls II at 3 p.m. Sunday's match also will see a special ticket promotion, with select tickets sold benefitting the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley. Tickets are available for $15 with proceeds from each sale going to the foundation. Fans interested in purchasing tickets through the promotion are encouraged to call Gio Fricchione (484) 403-0502 or Pauline Grady (610) 297-7292.
