Louisville City FC Shuts Down FC Montreal on the Road

September 3, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release

Aodhan Quinn headed in a 49th-minute corner kick, and goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski posted a clean sheet in his professional debut Saturday to lift Louisville City FC to a 1-0 win at FC Montreal.

The victory marked LouCity's second in a row and solidified the club's No. 2 USL Eastern Conference standing with three games left in its regular season.

On a sunny afternoon at Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard, LouCity managed to shut down an FC Montreal team that entered having won four of its last five games. The home squad combined to tally 16 goals in those contests before shut out Saturday.

Dobrowolski, a Loyola-Chicago product who signed with Louisville in June, played the full 90 minutes between the posts. Coach James O'Connor had also brought in recently retired keeper Scott Goodwin -- he's now enrolled at Harvard Medical School -- as an option with regular starter Greg Ranjitsingh on international duty with Trinidad and Tobago.

There was no need for the emergency backup. Dobrowolski came up with his biggest save in stoppage time near the end of the first half, thwarting an FC Montreal strike on goal. Out of the locker room, LouCity netted a go-ahead shot of its own when Ben Newnam found Quinn on the far post for the midfielder's third goal of 2016.

LouCity had other chances, namely a 23rd-minute cross from Quinn to defender Tarek Morad, who aligned in central midfield on Saturday rather than along the back row. Morad's try bounced off the right post. Ultimately, Louisville didn't need it.

LouCity continued to bounce back well from its only instance of back-to-back losses this season, a pair of defeats to end July. Since then, the club is 3-1-2 and has moved nine points clear of the third-place Charleston Battery.

Wearing their gold and white road kits, LouCity players also remained unbeaten in the new alternate jerseys this season.

JAMES O'CONNOR

Statement on the game: "I was obviously pleased with the performance. I thought we dominated the game. We controlled it for long periods. I just thought our decision making in the final third needed to be better. I thought we got into some decent positions. We could have won the game by more if I'm being honest. I thought we deserved to win the game by more."

On Tim Dobrowolski's performance: "I think for us, with Tim stepping in, like we've said before, we have tremendous belief in him. He deserves all the credit. Equally, I have to give a mention to Scott Goodwin, because he stepped in and helped us out in a really difficult position. It speaks highly of him."

How'd you see the scoring play come together? "Aodhan (Quinn) had a couple go across the face of the goal that we needed to put in. Quinnie obviously stepped in -- great delivery from Ben. I thought the pace he got on the ball was very good, and then equally Quinnie's finish was exactly what we wanted."

SCOTT GOODWIN

What was it like being back? "It was a lot of fun. Obviously I was kind of itching to get back with the guys. It was definitely cool to get one more experience under the belt. Overall, it was a great win and a great performance by Tim. I'm happy for him."

On Dobrowolski's debut: "I think overall, very solid. It's a great shutout on his part. He made a couple of key saves for us and seemed really good under pressure keeping the ball. It was a really good performance for him."

Would you do this over again? "Oh yeah, absolutely. If it's feasible for me, I'm always going to be there to help the team whenever I can. I'm very pleased that James thought of me to come be that extra guy. It's a good experience, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'd do anything for these guys."

AODHAN QUINN

Can you talk through the goal? "Yeah, we had good deliveries on corners. I think it was just a matter of time until someone got their head on one. We hit one off the post in the first half -- I think it was Tarek (Morad) who had a good header -- and I was lucky to be in the right spot."

How'd you see Tim do today in goal? "Tim did excellent. He was super confident back there and gave us a lot of confidence moving forward. He had a huge save in the first half, so we're really proud of Tim and happy he's with us."

Since July, you all are 3-1-2. What have you thought about the team's form lately? "We hit a little rough patch, but I think we're back on track now and in good form, which is exactly what every team wants. We've still got three more games to play (before the playoffs), so we're going to take it one game at a time and hopefully continue this form."
