September 3, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 News Release

Kyle Greig broke his 11-match scoreless streak but Whitecaps FC 2 (11W-7L-8D) suffered a late 2-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC 2 (9W-11L-6D) at Starfire Sports Complex on Friday evening. Darwin Jones scored the game-winner in the final minute of added time for the home side. The scene shifts to McLeod Athletic Park in Langley on Labour Day Monday, September 5 for the rematch between the Cascadia rivals. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. Tickets are available here.

If tonight is any indication, fans in Langley could expect another 90-plus minutes of exciting football.

WFC2 goalkeeper and Seattle native Spencer Richey, who was named to the bench of the USL Team of the Week last Tuesday, picked up where he left off, diving full stretch to parry a clean strike from S2 forward Irvin Parra in the 12th minute.

Spencer Richey with the like reflexes! #SEAvVAN - USL (@USL) September 3, 2016 On the other end, the 'Caps best chance of the first half would come in the form of a Greig header set up by a free kick from Fatawu Safiu, but the attempt would shoot straight into Seattle keeper Tyler Miller's hands in the 20th minute.

In the second half, Greig would get another chance and he would capitalize. Kianz Froese, making his first appearance since his return from a training stint in Germany, placed a curving corner kick perfectly right across the face of goal for Greig to head in, giving the captain his 11th goal on the season as WFC2 took the lead in the 64th minute.

And he's back! Greig just broke a run of 11 consecutive appearances without a goal for @wfc2 #SEAvVAN - USL (@USL) September 3, 2016 Just three minutes later, Sounders FC 2 would equalize with a score off a corner kick of their own, as Parra opened his USL account with a leaping volley into the far post.

The 'Caps would go for the win in the 81st minute when Daniel Haber's active play on the wing created a chance for Jordan Haynes on the first touch but Miller was alert to the threat, coming up with a reaction save to keep the match level.

Just when the game appeared to be headed to a stalemate, S2 broke off on a counter-attack, ignited by Mark O'Ojong in the middle, and completed by Jones' stunner from the left wing, giving Seattle the win on the final possession of the match.

With seconds remaining Darwin Jones gets the game-winner and keeps playoff hopes alive for @SoundersFC2! #SEAvVAN - USL (@USL) September 3, 2016 Despite the loss, Whitecaps FC 2 remain tied for third place in the Western Conference with 41 points. Sounders FC 2 improve to 33 points and now sit at 10th place, just two spots outside the playoff picture.
