Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 News Release
LANGLEY, BC - 18-year old striker Terran Campbell scored his first professional goal for Whitecaps FC 2 but Vancouver's comeback effort fell short as red-hot Real Monarchs SLC won 2-1 at McLeod Athletic Park on Sunday afternoon. It was not the result WFC2 were hoping for on a beautiful day in Langley as SLC won their sixth straight match. Head coach Rich Fagan opted for a young starting XI, with several of his players were called up to the first team for last Tuesday's Canadian Championship semifinal versus Montreal Impact.
Real Monarchs got on the scoresheet right out of the gates. In the sixth minute, defender Taylor Peay scored the opening goal off a corner. Peay was able to out-muscle his man and head the ball into the corner of the net past first-team goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi.
Soon after in the ninth minute, the Monarchs were back pressing as Andrew Brody hit a strike off the upright and the rebound came out to Peay. Looking for his second of the game, Peay was denied by Tornaghi with a diving save to his left. In the 21st minute, former WFC2 forward Daniel Haber took a wonderful through ball and hit a nice strike on goal but again Tornaghi was there to keep the ball out.
Then in the 22nd minute off another corner, it was Nick Besler who got his head on the cross, putting it past Tornaghi for the 2-0 lead.
The Blue and White were able to generate some offensive pressure in the 40th minute courtesy of Gloire Amanda, who found Kadin Chung in the box. Chung then tried to play an extra pass in the box before having his pass cleared away.
In the second half, the tide changed and WFC2 dictated most of the offensive opportunities. Their first shot on goal came in the 54th minute via Nazeem Bartman, who blasted a strike from just inside the box, but fired it wide of goal.
Later, it was Bartman again trying to put the Caps on the board off a 'Caps corner kick. The ball was headed down by Campbell and on the one hop, Bartman attempted the bicycle kick only for the ball to soar just over the crossbar.
Finally, in 78th minute, the 'Caps offensive pressure paid off as Campbell buried off a great ball swung in by WFC Residency call-up Nicolas Apostol. It was monumental for both as Campbell's first professional goal came off Apostol's first assist as a professional.
From there, it seemed WFC2 were destined for an equalizer as they continued the onslaught of pressure in the final 10 minutes of play. Their best look came off a cross from Apostol to Bartman in the 85th minute, who took it on the volley, hammering his attempt just over the bar.
Patrick Metcalfe came on as a second-half substitute and made his professional debut for Vancouver and helped initiate a number of chances but it would not be enough for the 'Caps.
Whitecaps FC 2 now head out on a three-match road trip, beginning with a visit to Cascadia rival Timbers 2 next Sunday, June 4. They are back home on Saturday, June 24 when they host Oklahoma City Energy FC at UBC Thunderbird Stadium for Community Day. Visit whitecapsfc2.com for tickets.
