Maulers get offensive with coaches

February 3, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release

The 2005 season promises to be a high-scoring affair for the Montgomery Maulers as one of the league's top offensive coordinators will lead the team in its first year. Veteran indoor football coach James Shiver has been named as the head coach and offensive coordinator while Clif Clark, the highly successful head coach of the Central Alabama Renegades for the past five years, will serve as the team's assistant head coach.

Shiver has been the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator over the past four years with the Lake Charles (LA) Landsharks, one of the top teams in the NIFL. During that time, Lake Charles compiled a 42-13 record with three playoff appearances.

In 2001, Lake Charles won its first of three straight division titles by compiling an 11-3 record and reaching the NIFL semifinals. In 2002, Shiver's high-powered offense averaged 50.6 points per game on way to a 13-1 record and another playoff appearance. In 2003, the Landsharks went 11-2 and reached the second round of the playoffs before losing 43-41 to eventual league champion Ohio Valley. Last year, the Landsharks finished 7-7 and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time.

A former college football player at Louisiana-Lafayette, Shiver played defensive back for two seasons of indoor football with Lafayette (IPFL) before joining the coaching ranks.

Clark provides the Maulers with a local connection after leading the Central Alabama Renegades (NAFL) to a 51-12 record over the last five years with five division titles, one regional title and one conference title during that time. Clark has coached two NAFL regional all-star teams and one conference all-star team in addition to serving as the league's commissioner for the Southern Conference.

An expansion franchise in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), the Montgomery Maulers offer seven nights of hard-hitting, high-scoring, "edge of your seat" excitement at historic Garrett Coliseum. The Maulers play their first-ever game on March 19 at Kissimmee, FL. The first home game is Saturday, April 2 against the SW Louisiana Swashbucklers. Season tickets start at $49 and are available by calling (334) 277-1881, visiting the Maulers' office at Eastdale Mall, or logging on to montgomerymaulers.com.
