Matt Swarmer Leads Iowa in Triple-A Debut
NASHVILLE, TN - Matt Swarmer carried Iowa through seven scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut and the I-Cubs (62-64) downed the Nashville Sounds (60-66) 4-0, Saturday at First Tennessee Park. The victory gave Iowa its fifth shutout in five days.
Swarmer - added to Iowa's roster from Single-A South Bend today - was brilliant, allowing just five hits, walking one and fanning eight. He became just the second I-Cub in 10 years to spin seven or more innings in his Triple-A debut. Swarmer went home with the win for his efforts. Justin Hancock took over in the eighth and blew away the Sounds, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three in two innings.
Iowa took the lead early with a three-run second inning. Jacob Hannemann sparked the effort with a leadoff walk and came in to score with back-to-back singles from Chris Dominguez and Ali Solis. Dominguez would score on a John Andreoli groundout and Mike Freeman brought in run number three with a double.
Freeman helped Iowa add insurance in the seventh as he knocked in a single behind Jemile Weeks' leadoff double to bring in the run. Freeman finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI to lead Iowa's offense. Bijan Rademacher and Solis also pitched in two-hit games.
Iowa and Nashville go head-to-head again at First Tennessee Park tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Catch the call on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com .
