Peterborough Petes News Release

(Peterborough, ON, August 16, 2014)- The Peterborough Petes are proud to announce that Head Coach Jody Hull and defenceman Matt Spencer captured the gold medal on Saturday as Team Canada won the 2014 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka U18 Tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Team Canada went undefeated at the tournament, including winning three round robin games each by a score of 5-1, followed by an 11-5 rout of Team USA before knocking off the host Czech Republic squad 6-2 in the final.

Spencer, a 6'1", 195lbs defenceman from Oakville, Ontario added two assists in the championship game, showing off an offensive prowess that was on display during his rookie season with the Petes in 2013/14. The 1997-born rearguard was drafted by the Petes in the first round, third overall in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, and is eligible for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Jody Hull wins his first gold medal as Head Coach of the U18 squad, after a championship tournament as Assistant Coach of Team Canada at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in Sochi, Russia.

Team Canada has now won the annual summer under-18 tournament seven consecutive years, and has won 19 of 24 tournaments since 1991. Peterborough native Mitchell Stephens (Saginaw Spirit) was also on the championship roster, registering six points in five tournament games.
