Madison Mallards News Release
Following a tight 6-5 loss to the Wisconsin Woodchucks on Saturday night, the Madison Mallards (15-18) hosted the Kenosha Kingfish (19-14) on Independence Day and walked it off in the ninth with a 4-3 victory.
The Mallards took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI-groundout from catcher Drake Baldwin (Missouri State). That lead held until the sixth inning as Mallards starting pitcher Andrew Neu (UW-Milwaukee) had a shutout going through five.
In the sixth inning, Neu was pulled after allowing a run to score on a wild pitch. Jack Anderson (Princeton) then came into the game and on the first pitch he threw, he gave up a two-run home run to Luke Stephenson (Xavier).
The Mallards wasted no time coming back from that deficit though, as Tyler Dean (St. Edwards) hit a two-run home run of his own to tie the game at three. That bomb was his first of the season.
The game remained tied going into the ninth as Kade Lancour (UW-Whitewater) pitched two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Mallards loaded the bases with nobody out. After a groundout and force out at the plate, Matt Scannell (Princeton) stepped up and hit a walk-off single with one out to win it for the Ducks.
This was the Mallards second win against Kenosha this season in three games. With Traverse City's win over Kalamazoo and the Kingfish' loss, Kenosha is now one game back of first place in the Great Lakes East division with just one game to go in the first half of the season.
The Mallards will go for the sweep of Kenosha in the final game of their four-game homestand at 1:05 p.m. tomorrow. It will be the first 1:05 start for the Mallards this season and one of only two during the entirety of the 2021 home schedule.
