Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Sean Keeler threw six shutout innings in relief, but Matt Nandin had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 15th inning in the New Jersey Jackals' 5-4 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tornadoes held leads of 1-0 and 4-1 at various points in the game, but Nandin capped the three-run rally for New Jersey in the eighth with a two-run single, tying the game at 4-4.
Walker McKinven tossed six innings in a no-decision, allowing just two hits and one run (earned), while walking five batters.
Keeler allowed five batters to reach base, one on an error, two from intentional walks, and two hits.
Eric Katman had a perfect seventh inning a the first of five relievers for Worcester.
Nick Serino blew the save, allowing two of the three runs he inherited from Matt McDonald to score. (McDonald gave up one before being pulled from the game.)
Matt Jacobs led the fifth inning off with a triple, and scored on Tony Patane's RBI single. The Jackals tied the game half an inning later, when Carlos Guzman scored on the Jeff Lanning sacrifice fly.
The Tornadoes took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a two-run double by Alex Nunez with the bases loaded. He scored both Brendon Kelliher and Chris Torres to give Worcester its second lead of the game.
Worcester added some insurance against Jimmer Kennedy in the eighth inning, thanks to the Mike Samela RBI double. He plated Jacobs, who was hit by a pitch to start the frame.
Francisco Caraballo had the first of three Jackals RBI in the eighth with a single, before Nandin tied the game with his base knock.
Mike Mullen got the loss for Worcester, pitching one-third of an inning. He gave up two hits, including the game-winner for the New Jersey shortstop.
Keith Cantwell earned his second win of the year, improving to (1-1) with four saves against the Tornadoes. He tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. He relieved Jeff Gogal, who went 2.2 scoreless frames after Jake Wiley's outing.
The Jackals left the bases loaded in the 14th inning, with Keeler striking out the last batter he faced, Nick Giarraputo.
Tornadoes manager Chip Plante was ejected before the game started, so his former Bates College teammate and former fellow coach at Georgia College, Steve Mrowka was at the helm for Worcester. He has suited up for just over 10 Tornadoes games late this season as a bench coach. He coached Brendon Kelliher at George Washington, where Mrowka was the head coach.
The first game of the seven-game, eight-day homestand is Thursday at 7:05pm for another Trivia Night at the HIP. The Tornadoes will host the Kansas City T-Bones in the final interleague series of the 2012 season for the home club. Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM.tv will start at 6:50.
