Mather with Big Night in 7-6 Win
September 2, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
Joe Mather knocked in four runs and scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Springfield came from behind on Wednesday night, defeating the Tulsa Drillers by a score of 7-6 at Hammons Field.
Mather, who had just two RBIs in his first 12 games in a Springfield uniform this year, came up big with a pair of two-run doubles.
Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth, Mather ripped a Matt Renolds (0-2) pitch down the left-field line, plating Colt Sedbrook and Andrew Brown to tie the game at 6-6. Two batters later, Donovan Solano's base hit up the middle brought home Mather, putting Springfield up 7-6.
Casey Mulligan made the lead hold, retiring the first two hitters he faced in the ninth, before Springfield committed their fourth defensive error of the game. Rex Rundgren's hard grounder to first was misplayed by Brown, allowing the tying run to reach first. Pinch hitter Ryan Harvey stepped to the plate and went down on three pitches, as Mulligan fanned him to record his second save in as many tries at the Double-A level.
Wednesday's game was one of the more bizarre games for the Cards this year. Texas League Pitcher of the Year Samuel Deduno hit a second-inning homer and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Leading 3-0, Deduno got a bit erratic, as he walked a pair and committed a throwing error to load the bases. With two outs, Steven Hill ripped a two-run double to left, Springfield's first hit of the game, making it 3-2. Mather followed with his first of two, two-run doubles, putting the Cards ahead 4-3.
Nick Additon pitched a scoreless seventh and turned it over to Eduardo Sanchez in the eighth. Sanchez struggled initially, but looked like he was going to get out of the inning with the lead. With runners at first and second, Sanchez got Michael Paulk to ground into what looked like it would be the inning-ending double-play. Shortstop Pete Kozma couldn't make the play though, as Paulk reached safely to load the bases. Sanchez then gave up a three-run double o Daniel Mayora, as the Drillers took a 6-4 advantage.
Thanks to Springfield's three-run eighth, Sanchez (2-0) actually picked up the win.
Additon took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, over seven innings of work.
Tulsa's Duduno failed to record what would have been a league-high 13th win, as he allowed four unearned runs on just two hits over six innings in the no-decision.
Trey Hearne (11-3) takes on Tulsa left-hander Brandon Durden (7-5) on Thursday, as the Cards and Drillers match up for game three of the seven-game home stand. Game time on Thursday is 7:10pm. Don't forget that Friday night is another AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Display.
Tickets are available for all seven remaining home games, by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
