Mateychuk Named 35th Captain in Warriors History

With his return from Columbus Blue Jackets training camp, the Moose Jaw Warriors are proud to announce Denton Mateychuk as the 35th captain in franchise history.

"I don't thin it was a hard decision at all for our organization," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary.

"When you look at everything that we want to be about in terms of the effort and the compete level in races and battles, that's Denton Mateychuk to a tee."

Mateychuk joins an illustrious group of captains in Warriors' history, including for the past two seasons Daemon Hunt, as well as Theo Fleury, Brayden Point, Kendall McFaull and Brett Howden.

Mateychuk became one of the highest drafted Warriors in history this summer when he was picked 12th overall by the Blue Jackets.

O'Leary said the Dominion City, MB product has all the traits that you want in a captain.

"The bigger the moment gets, he gets closer to the ice and wants to be the go-to guy," he said. "He drags guys into the fight, he wants to be great, he wants to be a pro and that's how he carries himself."

Mateychuk was originally drafted 11th overall by the Warriors in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. In 88 career games, he has 16 goals and 75 points with the Warriors.

Brayden Yager and Atley Calvert will serve as assistant captains for the 2022-23 season.
