Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

For Denton Mateychuk, just being named to the 2022 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game was an honour.

When the Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman found out on Friday that he had been named the captain for Team White at the game, that took it over the top.

"I wasn't exactly expecting it, it's pretty cool," Mateychuk said. "I'm pretty humble about it and I'm excited to have the opportunity to lead those guys."

Mateychuk is the first Warrior in franchise history to have the honour of wearing a letter at the annual showcase of the Canadian Hockey League's top prospects for the upcoming NHL Draft.

"It's definitely a huge honour," he said. "I'm going to do my best to be a leader there and just do whatever I can to help everyone out."

Mateychuk is the top-ranked WHL defenceman by NHL Central Scouting, coming in at ninth among North American skaters in the Mid-Season Rankings.

Through 54 games this season, Mateychuk has nine goals and 50 points, both are career-highs. His point total is eighth among defencemen this season.

Mateychuk said he won't be changing much about his game going into the Top Prospects Game.

"It's all the top players for the draft, but I'm just going to play my game and do everything that I always do to prepare," he said.

Warriors leading-scorer Jagger Firkus will join Mateychuk on Team White at the Top Prospects Game.

Firkus said he's happy to still be on the same side as Mateychuk.

"It's honestly a good thing, he's quite the player, so I don't really want to forecheck him or anything, so I'm pretty happy I'm with him," he said.

Mateychuk said he's looking forward to sharing in the experience with his teammate.

"It's pretty cool to go with a teammate and do that together," he said. "It's going to be a really good time and I'm very excited for it."

Mateychuk and Firkus will hit the ice at the Top Prospects Game in Kitchener, Ont. on Wednesday, Mar. 23.
