Mateo Homers in Dogs Debut, but Charleston Drops Second Straight in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Second baseman Welfrin Mateo broke the shutout with a solo home run in the eighth as part of his RiverDogs debut but Charleston dropped their second straight to the Greenville Drive, falling, 5-1, on Saturday night at Fluor Field.

Just called up from extended spring training and appearing in his first game at the full-season level, Mateo went 2-for-4, including ripping a deep shot to left-center to get Charleston (29-31) on the board. The 22-year-old Dominican prospect had batted .287 with a .359 on-base percentage over four seasons at the rookie-ball levels before garnering his first Class A assignment on Saturday.

The RiverDogs outhit the Drive (21-39) 8-3 in the loss with the Red Sox affiliate capitalizing on three Charleston errors to plate their runs. First baseman Victor Acosta ripped a pair of two-run extra-base hits in his first two trips to the plate to put Greenville in front 5-0 after three. Acosta scored the only run he didn't drive in on a throwing error by Wilkerman Garcia in the first as part of a three-run, little-league homer.

Right-hander Dalton Higgins was sharp in relief, retiring five of the 11 batters he faced with strikeouts and yielding just one baserunner on a hit by pitch. It was the second straight outing not allowing a hit or a run on the road trip for the Dallas Baptist product.

Rony Garcia (2-3) only yielded three hits but hit two batters in his first outing since exiting in a rain-shortened start (2.0 innings) on Saturday at The Joe. The 20-year-old was charged with three earned runs and suffered the loss after exiting in the fifth.

Red Sox prospect Denyi Reyes (5-3) was superb for the Drive, spinning 7.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts and no walks as he scattered five hits.

Charleston has now lost four of the first five meetings with the last-place Drive this season.

The RiverDogs will try to salvage in a win in the series in their final road game of the first-half on Sunday at Fluor Field at 4:05 p.m. Charleston will roll out southpaw Dalton Lehnen (4-3, 2.19) to the mound to face Drive right-hander Kutter Crawford (0-2, 1.99). Sunday's contest will be broadcast on 1250 WTMA in the tri-county area, with audio available at riverdogs.com and the RiverDogs TuneIn radio station.

The RiverDogs will open a seven-game homestand at Riley Park by welcoming in the Asheville Tourists on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Fans can bring their four-legged friends on a Monday Dog Day at The Joe featuring dollar beers and hot dogs courtesy of Busch Light.
