June 21, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Philadelphia Union II News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - Bethlehem Steel FC (4-7-4) looks to build on a strong win in its last match when it hosts the Tampa Bay Rowdies (8-1-6) at Goodman Stadium in the Lehigh Valley this Saturday evening.
The Steel have been in a rough run of form lately, but broke that trend last weekend with an emphatic 3-1 win over Saint Louis FC, who had only given up eight goals all season going into that match. Saint Louis had previously taken down MLS' Chicago Fire in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup before taking on the Steel and then knocked out another MLS side in FC Cincinnati this last Wednesday. The Boys in Blue now head to Goodman Stadium for the first time in 2019 in what will be team captain James Chambers' 100th match with the club.
This weekend's match gets no easier for the Steel FC attack with the Tampa Bay Rowdies coming to town. The Rowdies have also only given up eight goals coming into this match and have one of the best goalkeepers in the league in former Philadelphia Union backstop John McCarthy. McCarthy has made 40 saves on the year and brings a goals against average of 0.53 goals per match into this contest.
The Steel bring a 1-1-2 all-time record against the Florida side into this match, after picking up their only win against Tampa Bay in the last meeting between the two clubs on the last day of the 2018 regular season. No doubt that this is going to be a tough one, but being back in the Lehigh Valley should give Steel FC an emotional boost.
Bethlehem Steel FC takes on the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, June 22 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Tickets are available here with the match set to be broadcast on ESPN+. Fans should note that the match has been moved from Talen Energy Stadium to Goodman Stadium in the Lehigh Valley. More information is available here.
