Mississippi Braves News Release
Montgomery, AL - Two unearned runs in the second inning spelled the difference for the Montgomery Biscuits as they took down the Mississippi Braves 3-1 on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Montgomery (9-8; 44-43) managed just two hits against the Braves trio of Greg Ross (2-1), Brandon Cunniff and Chasen Shreve, but shaky defense and wild pitches helped the Biscuits out to an early lead.
Cameron Seitzer started the second by reaching on a throwing error by first baseman Seth Loman, and Richie Shaffer walked to put two men aboard. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and Kes Carter hit a soft bouncing ball to Loman that he pulled up on too early for a second error and the first run of the day. Shaffer scored on a second wild pitch to make it 2-0 Biscuits.
Montgomery got their only two hits on back-to-back pitches in the third. Jake Hager and Luke Maile hit consecutive doubles off Ross with one out in the inning to make it 3-0 Biscuits. Maile's double was the final base runner the Biscuits managed in the contest.
Ross settled in and retired the final 11 batters he faced, finishing with six innings and three runs--one earned--on two hits, striking out three and walking one in the loss. Cunniff and Shreve each pitched a perfect inning to make it 17 straight set down to finish the game, with Shreve striking out the side in the eighth.
But the Braves (10-7; 49-37) were stifled by Albert Suarez (1-0) over six innings, managing just a run on three hits against the Biscuits starter. Matt Ramsey earned his sixth save, allowing just a hit in a scoreless ninth.
Mississippi got their lone run in the fifth. Matt Kennelly led off with a walk, Kyle Kubitza singled and Barrett Kleinknecht was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mycal Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center to pull the deficit to 3-1.
The M-Braves will try to snap a two-game skid in Sunday evening's third of five games, with right-hander Williams Perez (3-4, 2.52) slated to take on Montgomery left-hander Grayson Garvin (0-3, 3.77). First pitch is set for 5:35 PM CT.
