Marvelous: Marvel and Power shut down Crawdads

Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power made it back-to-back victories with a 5-1 win over the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday night. James Marvel set the stage with six innings of one-run baseball.

West Virginia took the lead, and never surrendered it, in the third. Alexis Bastardo began the inning with a double to center, the only extra base hit for the Power in the game. Bastardo came around on a Ty Moore sacrifice fly to center. Stephen Alemais would also come home later on an error charged to Ti'Quan Forbes.

Hickory and West Virginia traded solo runs in the fourth. Forbes scored on a Shaq Matta single against Marvel. The Power brought home Arden Pabst on a ground out. Once the fourth ended, West Virginia held a 3-1 lead.

Marvel finished his night with eight strikeouts, a career high, and he never surrendered a walk. He was eventually handed his second win of the season.

The Power added two more in the seventh on a Carlos Munoz single and an error. West Virginia cruised to victory 5-1. Michael Matuella only last two and two thirds innings for the Crawdads and was dealt his first loss of the year. The Power have now won their first series at home in 2017.

West Virginia returns to the diamond on Friday night and welcomes in the Lexington Legends. The Power send Oddy Nunez (0-3) to the hill for a Cinco de Mayo themed night at Appalachian Power Park. He will be opposed by Travis Eckert (0-1). Tickets and information are available online and by calling 304-344-BATS.
