Juan Soto Placed on Disabled List
May 4, 2017 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Hagerstown Suns, Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, placed right fielder Juan Soto on the seven-day Disabled List and added outfielder Oliver Ortiz from Extended Spring Training on Thursday.
Soto suffered a right ankle injury on Tuesday night while sliding home to score a run against the Rome Braves in the bottom of the sixth inning. He was removed from the game before the seventh inning.
The 18-year-old slugger from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is ranked third among Nationals prospects by MLB.com and Baseball America. Soto recently joined the Top 100 Prospects list distributed by MLB.com.
Soto batted third for the Suns in all 23 games played with a batting average of .360, good for a second-place tie among all South Atlantic League hitters. His .427 on-base percentage is tied for third-best in the league and he reached base safely in 15 consecutive games between April 8 and April 23 to set the longest streak in SAL play with teammate Sheldon Neuse.
Ortiz joins the Suns for the first time in his career. The 20-year-old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic split his time in 2016 between the Gulf Coast League Nationals and Auburn Doubledays in the New York-Penn League (Class A Short Season). Ortiz batted .250 and drove in 18 runs during 47 games with Auburn.
Hagerstown currently leads the SAL Northern Division with a 16-10 record and boasts a league-best team batting average of .287. The Suns host a rubber match in their three-game series with the first-place Rome Braves from the SAL Southern Division on Thursday at Municipal Stadium with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
HAGERSTOWN SUNS ROSTER UPDATE: 25 active players (5 on DL)
MOVE: OF Juan Soto (#10) to 7-day Disabled List
ADD: OF Oliver Perez (#8) from Extended Spring Training
