(Ogden, UT) - The Owlz scored three runs in the ninth inning, coming from behind to beat the Ogden Raptors (2-4), 3-2, on Wednesday night at Lindquist Field in Ogden.
Owlz' starter John Swanda and Raptors' starter Jose Chacin were locked in a pitcher's duel. Swanda went a career-high four innings while striking out five batters without allowing a run. Swanda was matched by Chacin who threw five shutout innings, striking out seven Owlz' hitters.
Ogden broke through for the game's first run in the fifth inning. Daniel Robinson opened the inning by ripping a triple off the left-center field wall. The next hitter, Jeremy Arocho then singled into right, scoring Robinson, giving the Raptors a 1-0 lead. Ogden added to that lead in the sixth, scoring a run on a wild pitch, pushing their lead to 2-0.
The scored stayed at 2-0 until the top of the ninth inning. Kevin Maitan opened the inning with a single to left, his third hit of the night. Orlando Martinez then smashed his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right, tying the game at two. The next two batters reached on a walk and a hit batter. With one out in the inning, Cole Taylor hit a ground ball to the left side that was misplayed, allowing Tim Millard to score from second, giving the Owlz a 3-2 lead.
Jake Lee (2) came on from the bullpen and worked around a pair of singles in the ninth to close the door, earning the save in the Owlz' 3-2 win. Reliever Zack Kelly (1-0) earned the win while Vinny Santanserio (0-1) was charged with the loss. The Owlz return home for the 2018 home opener at the Home of the Owlz at 7:05 against the Ogden Raptors with fireworks following the game. Cole Duensing will make the start for the Owlz. NOTES: Maitan and Martinez combined for all five hits for the Owlz in the win. Maitan extended his hitting streak to five games, matching Francisco Del Valle for the longest active hitting streak on the team.
