Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

In his first game for the Kernels, Brett Martinez went 2-3 with a triple and 5 RBI as the Kernels won their fourth game in a row, 12-6 at South Bend on Wednesday.

Martinez joined the Kernels late Tuesday from extended spring training and made his first start at catcher tonight. With the bases loaded in the third, Martinez tripled to center to clear the bases and added a 2 RBI single to right in the fourth.

The win improves the Kernels first half record to 6-3 and moves them into second place in the MWL West, 1 game behind Quad Cities and Clinton. South Bend falls to 1-9.

The Silver Hawks jumped on the Kernels and starting pitcher Tim Schoeninger (2-0) for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. But the Kernels settled down and took the lead, 6-4 after three innings.

Schoeninger picked up the win despite giving up 12 hits and four runs in six innings of work. Anthony Sullivan threw two innings of perfect relief and Pedro Herrera gave up two hits and two runs in the ninth.

Matt Sweeney extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 2-5 with two runs scored. Chris Pettit, Marco Albano and Ryan Mount each had an RBI.

Game three of the Kernels four game series with the Silver Hawks is Thursday night at 5:30 pm from South Bend. RHP Trevor Bell (0-1) is scheduled to take the hill for the Kernels.

After wrapping up the South Bend series on Friday, the Kernels head to the brand new Dow Diamond and four games with the Great Lakes Loons before returning to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday, April 26 to start a four game set with Lansing.
