Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud members of the United Hockey League, announce that goaltender Joel Martin has been called-up to the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL). Kalamazoo also announces the completion of a trade with the Elmira Jackals for goaltender Kevin Kurk.

Martin, 22, participated in training camp of the Barons in September giving up just 1 goal in the lone game that he played. While Joel remains a rookie under United Hockey League standards, the netminder played like a veteran down the stretch for the K-Wings last year and nearly brought Kalamazoo back from a three games to none deficit against the Rockford IceHogs in the Opening Round of Colonial Cup Playoffs.

In his one start his season, Martin stopped 30 of 31 shots he faced in the K-Wings 6-1 victory last Saturday (10/22) against the Port Huron Flags.

"Joel's performance here as a K-Wing has earned him this chance," said Director of Hockey Operations/Head Coach Mark Reeds. "While we expect to have him (Martin) back soon, we are more than confident in the abilities of Jeff Reynaert."

Reynaert will serve as the K-Wings starting goaltender this weekend in both of Kalamazoo games. After close to a week off, the K-Wings return to the ice tomorrow night on the road against the Motor City Mechanics. The K-Wings have their first regular season home game this Saturday, October 29th against their archrivals the Fort Wayne Komets.

Besides being the home opener, Saturday's 7:30 p.m. contest against the Komets will also be the K-Wings 2nd Annual Orange Ice Game. There will be trick-or-treating before the game in the concourse for the kids, as well a costume contest for both adults and kids. The first 5,000 fans into Wings Stadium will receive a FREE Magnetic Schedule Courtesy of Meijer.

Following the game, Pepsi will be handing out Mountain Dew Pitch Black II to the crowd (while supplies last) and the K-Wings will be auctioning off their special Halloween Jerseys and the proceeds of the auction will go to benefit a local charity.

In Martin's absence, the K-Wings have completed a trade with the Elmira Jackals for goaltender Kevin Kurk for Kalamazoo's fifth round pick in the UHL's Waiver Draft on April 17, 2006.

Kurk, who will be with the K-Wings tomorrow in Motor City, will be listed as an emergency goaltender on the K-Wings roster. After spending four seasons as a standout at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (R.P.I), Kurk spent his rookie season last year in Elmira.

Ticket Office hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, give the Wings Stadium Ticket Office a call during regular business hours at (269) 345-5101.
