Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Francis Martes gave up one hit over six shutout innings while Derek Fisher, Evan Gattis, and Chase McDonald provided the offensive fireworks as Corpus Christi throttled Tulsa 6-0 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 5,225.

Martes (1-0), rated Houston's No.3 prospect by mlb.com, retired 14 consecutive Drillers from the first to the sixth. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound, 20-year-old Dominican walked two and struck out one. Forty-six of his 78 pitches were strikes.

Tulsa (1-2) blustered in the first but came up empty. Willie Calhoun dumped a double inside the right-field line and raced to third on an errant pick-off throw. Jacob Scavuzzo coaxed a two-out walk before Alex Verdugo flew to left.

Fisher's first Double-A home run staked Martes and the Hooks (2-1) to a 2-0 advantage through one. Fisher drove the first pitch he saw from Felipe Gonzalez to the berm in left with Alex Bregman aboard via a one-out single.

Rehabbing major leaguer Gattis cracked a 342-foot homer to left the next inning for a 5-0 Corpus Christi lead. Singles by Jack Mayfield and Bregman set the stage, and Gattis clobbered an 89-mph, 2-0, two-out fastball.

Gonzalez (0-1), who lasted four frames, allowed seven hits and three walks in an 84-pitch effort (48). The 24-year-old from Guadalupe, Mexico, fanned three in his initial Double-A appearance.

McDonald closed the scoring with a 332-foot lead-off laser to left off Michael Johnson during the eighth.

Tulsa then stirred up trouble for Reymin Guduan, who entered after two scoreless innings from Michael Freeman. Kyle Farmer's single and a two out double by Verdugo put Drillers at second and third for Yadir Drake, who struck out.

Gattis and Mayfield had three hits each.

Hooks lefty Brian Holmes draws the Sunday, 2:05 pitching assignment against Springfield's Andrew Morales as Corpus Christi changes opponents. It's H-E-B Kids Day, so all children run the bases postgame. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
