Jackson Leads Big Offensive Day as Riders Sweep
April 9, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS - Behind a big day at the plate, including an impressive performance from Double-A newcomer Joe Jackson, the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, completed the sweep of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals with a 9-1 win at Arvest Ballpark.
The RoughRiders (3-0) wasted no chance getting on the scoreboard, as Lewis Brinson doubled home Ryan Cordell in the top of the first to build a 1-0 lead. However, the Naturals (0-3) got the run back against Frisco starter Sam Wolff in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Raul Mondesi.
From there, Wolff (1-0) got in the zone and so did the bats. The RoughRiders put up their second five-run inning in as many days, this time in the top of the fourth against Northwest Arkansas starter Christian Binford (0-1). Jackson got the scoring barrage started with a two-run double off the wall. Two more runs scored after Naturals right fielder Orlando Calixte dropped a fly ball, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kellin Deglan completed the scoring surge to pad the lead.
The RoughRiders didn't slow down against Binford in the fifth, adding runs on RBI doubles by Zach Cone and Jackson. Jackson, who made his Double-A debut Friday, finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, a walk, and a run scored. He's 4-for-8 with two doubles, one triple, and four RBI in his first two Double-A games. In addition to Jackson's big day, four other Frisco hitters registered multiple hits, and the Riders tallied a season-high 14 hits Saturday evening.
The Riders added one more run in the sixth on Ronald Guzman's first RBI of the season. That was plenty of support for Wolff, who turned in the Riders' third straight quality start to begin the season. Wolff allowed just three hits, one run, three walks and two strikeouts in the victory. RoughRiders starters combined to allow one run and eight hits in 18 innings of work over the three contests in Springdale, with each earning a victory.
The win marks Frisco's first three-game sweep since August 15-17, 2014 at Tulsa. It also marks the second 3-0 start in franchise history, joining the 2008 squad that finished 84-56.
The Riders look to continue their hot streak as they travel to North Little Rock for a series with the Arkansas Travelers in the latter half of the opening six-game road trip. Left-hander Victor Payano (0-0, -.-- ERA) is scheduled to make the start for the RoughRiders, against righty Alex Blackford (0-0, -.-- ERA). Live coverage from Dickey-Stephens Park can be heard on the Frisco RoughRiders Radio Network, on the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App. Dr Pepper Pregame Show coverage begins at 5:35 p.m.
The RoughRiders will open their 2016 home schedule at Dr Pepper Ballpark on Thursday, April 14 against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Opening Night will be the first Thirsty Thursday of the season with $1 domestic draft beers, $2 craft and import beers, and $1 Dr Pepper Products from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The first 2,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive a 2016 RoughRiders schedule magnet and after the game, everyone in attendance will be invited onto the field to watch an incredible post-game fireworks show.
