Cards Rally Late to Take Series

San Antonio let a late lead slip away during a frustrating 6-4 loss to Springfield in Saturday night's series finale at Wolff Stadium.

For the second straight night, the Missions were able to race out to an early lead. In the bottom of the second, San Antonio took advantage of a pair of Springfield defensive miscues to plate the game's first two runs. The bad break did not faze Cardinals' starter Daniel Poncedeleon, who kept the Missions off the board over the next four innings.

Springfield got a run back in the fourth off Cesar Vargas courtesy of a David Washington double to right.

Vargas, who was making his organizational debut, was very solid Saturday, surrendering just one other run in his five and two-thirds innings. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed just four hits and one walk, while fanning seven.

With the score tied at two in the seventh, the Missions caught another break when catcher Ryan Miller scored from third on a Poncedeleon wild pitch to make the score 3-2.

However, San Antonio's good luck would end there. Springfield answered back in the top of the eighth against lefty Brandon Alger (0-1), benefitting from a key dropped fly ball in left by Alberth Martinez to plate three runs. Collin Radack delivered the big blow of the frame with a go-ahead, two-run single up the middle.

After the Cards added another in the ninth to push the lead to three, Ronnie Shaban (1st save) worked around a Gabriel Quintana leadoff homer in the bottom half to lock up the series for Springfield (2-1). Poncedeleon (1-0) earned the win after allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk, while striking out three over seven innings.

San Antonio (1-2) resumes its season-opening, six-game homestand Sunday with the first of three against the Tulsa Drillers. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM. The first 500 kids 12 & under will receive a free cereal bow courtesy of Kellogg's. Luis Diaz (0-0, 0.00) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Drillers counter with fellow righty Scott Barlow (0-0, 0.00).
