Texas Legends News Release
Frisco, TX, OCT. 31, 2011 - The Texas Legends basketball operations department once again gets stronger as Harlem Globetrotter legend Marques Haynes will join the staff. Haynes is the first Harlem Globetrotter to be inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Fame, in 1998, as a player. The only other Harlem Globetrotter to be inducted in the Basketball Hall-of-Fame, as a player, is Goose Tatum. Tatum was included in 2011. Haynes is also enshrined in over ten other Hall-of-Fames, including the NAIA Hall-of-Fame and the Oklahoma Sports Hall-of-Fame.
"Marques Haynes is a true basketball legend, not only in Texas, but around the world," commented Legends Owner and Dallas Mavericks General Manager Donnie Nelson. "He deserves credit for helping to make basketball the global game that it is today, and should be recognized as one of the greatest players of all time. The way he could dribble the ball is unmatched in today's game."
Marques Haynes' college career at Langston University included 112 wins versus' 3 losses, including an upset win over the 1946 Harlem Globetrotters in Oklahoma City. The improbable victory led to interest by Abe Saperstein and the Harlem Globetrotters.
Haynes is widely considered the greatest dribbler of all-time and a major influence on the likes of Bob Cousy, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, and many more. Haynes becomes the second basketball Hall-of-Famer to join the Legends staff, as Assistant General Manager Nancy Lieberman is also a member.
"I am honored to be able to join such a first class organization as the Texas Legends," commented Haynes. "To be able to join such people as Donnie Nelson, Spud Webb, Del Harris, and Nancy Lieberman is a great opportunity. Basketball is constantly on my mind - and I have seen more than my fair share of players over the years - and I can't wait to assist in any manner necessary."
Haynes, who is currently writing a book about his Hall-of-Fame career, is also a renowned speaker on both the corporate and youth levels. To schedule a Marques Haynes speaking engagement, please contact Marques at mhaynes@TexLegends.com.
The Legends will open up their season with a home opener on Saturday, November 26th at 3:00PM. The Team plays at HP Court @ Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco.
