Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins have announced that second baseman Joey Wendle has been assigned to Jacksonville to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment. Wendle is expected to play for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Durham Bulls in game five of the series on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. from 121 Financial Ballpark.

Wendle was placed on the 10-day IL on June 1 (retroactive to May 31). Thus far in 2022, he has played 29 games with the Miami Marlins, slashing .284/.340/.420/.761 with two home runs and 11 RBI's.

Originally selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the sixth round in the 2012 MLB draft from West Chester of Pennsylvania. The Marlins acquired Wendle in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on November 30, 2021, in exchange for outfielder Kameron Misner. In seven seasons, he's played in 465 games, hitting .274 with 29 home runs, and 178 RBIs. He made his major league debut with the Oakland Athletics on August 31, 2016, before spending 2018-2021 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

This marks his second rehab assignment in the International League. He last rehabbed in 2019, spending five games with the Durham Bulls.

Wendle is the fourth player in 2022 to join Jacksonville on a rehab assignment following INF/OF Brian Anderson, LHP Richard Bleier, who rehabbed with the Jumbo Shrimp on May 22, and RHP Dylan Floro, who rehabbed with the Jumbo Shrimp from April 30-May 9.
