Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY. - Robert Dugger tossed six quality innings and TJ Friedl hit his fifth homerun of the season to lift the Louisville Bats (26-44) 2-1 over the Iowa Cubs (33-37) on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
After a harmless first inning from both sides, Iowa struck in the top of the second inning as Narciso Crook got the I-Cubs on the board all on his. Crook led off the inning with a walk and subsequently stole second and third base, drawing a pick-off attempt on his way to third that got away from Louisville pitcher Robert Dugger, allowing Crook to score on an error and take a 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last long as Louisville answered with a run of its own in the following inning. A one out RBI single off the bat of Jose Barrero tied the contest 1-1 and led to a bases loaded opportunity for the Bats, but the Bats couldn't take advantage of the threat, leaving the score knotted 1-1.
TJ Friedl broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth, launching a solo shot to right field, his fifth homerun of the year, to give the Bats a 2-1 lead.
Robert Dugger (1-3, 4.80) turned a quality start, tossing six innings of three hit baseball, only allowing a single run while striking out three. The outing marks his longest start of the season.
Iowa threatened in the top of the ninth, getting a runner to third base, but Fernando Cruz was able to pitch out of the jam and close the game, earning his team leading 11th save.
The Bats and I-Cubs will conclude their six-game series tomorrow, June 26, with first pitch set for 1:05 pm E.T. Righty Deck McGuire (0-2, 6.08) will make his second start of the week for Louisville as he takes on Iowa's righty Caleb Killian (2-0, 2.51).
