Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - The countdown to the 2023-24 Ontario Hockey League season begins, as home opener dates across the league are announced. For the first time since the 2019-20 season, the Otters will open the home portion of their schedule in September.

On Saturday, September 30 at 7:00 P.M., the puck will drop at the Erie Insurance Arena for Home Opener 2023 (pres. by Erie County Community College of Pennsylvania). Working alongside Erie County Community College of Pennsylvania (EC3PA), fans can look forward to a number of exciting and unique activations for the 2023 edition of the home opener. This will be the first home opener for the Otters under head coach Stan Butler, and the 11th time in team history that Erie has opened its home schedule in September.

Erie has been very successful in their Erie Insurance Arena regular season debuts of late, winning four-straight home openers. Expectations will be high for players and fans alike; last season, 5,209 Otters fans - the highest-attended home opener since 2013 - filled the Erie Insurance Arena on October 8 as the hometown team would defeat the eventual Western Conference champion London Knights, 3-1. The home opener represents the first of 34 game days in one of the league's premier facilities.

For the first time in team history, the Erie Otters will host the Eastern Conference's Mississauga Steelheads for the opening game of the home schedule. In four meetings during the 2022-23 season, Erie grabbed at least a point out of every contest enroute to a 2-0-1-1 record - including an electrifying 7-3 home victory back on December 3. March 17, the latest meeting between the two clubs, saw two terrific performances for Erie forwards - highly-touted 2023 NHL Draft prospect Carey Terrance scored his 30th goal of the regular season and former Mississauga Senators star Malcolm Spence tied a career-high three-point night with a goal and two assists. The home opener meeting will mark the first time a first-overall pick has played for the Otters at the EIA since the 2014-15 season, as Matthew Schaefer makes his home debut for Erie. The Otters will be the visiting team for the home opener of Mississauga on the previous night - Friday, September 29.

Further information regarding the home opener, including promotions, activations, and fan festivities, will be unveiled closer to the start of the 2023-24 season. The complete 2023-24 season schedule will be announced Tuesday, June 27 at 11:00 A.M. on Otters' social media, OttersHockey.com, and on the Ontario Hockey League website.

The Erie Otters are ecstatic to return hockey to downtown Erie for the 27th season and reignite the best fan base in the OHL in pursuit of a return to the playoffs.
