Frederick Keys News Release
The Frederick Keys battled back from three deficits to defeat Wilmington, salvaging a game of its four-game series 10-7 on Saturday night. The Keys third pitcher of the night John Mariotti held the fort, throwing four scoreless innings as the Keys raced from behind.
Trailing 2-0 in the second inning, 3B Billy Rowell stroked a two-run home run on a rocket to right field to tie the game at 2-2. Next up was SS Pedro Florimon who homered to left field to put Frederick atop. The back-to-back home runs were a first for the Keys in 2010.
Wilmington battled back to lead two more times, and up 5-4 in the sixth inning the Keys would finally take the lead for good. With the bases loaded and two down, CF Xavier Avery singled to right field. Miguel Abreu scored from third base and as the throw was cut off Brian Ward scored from second base. With Avery caught in a rundown between first and second base, Kyle Hudson came all the way around from first base to score. When Avery was tagged the Keys had a 7-5 lead.
Frederick would score three more runs in the seventh inning after a dropped fly ball with two down led to two unearned runs.
With his four scoreless innings the Keys plated six runs and Mariotti got the deserved win. He is now 3-3 on the year.
In the top of the ninth inning Keys manager Orlando Gomez was tossed out of the game after a ball hit over the head of Wilmington LF Jamar Walton by Keys 1B Jacob Julius was inexplicably called caught. Walton threw the ball into to second base as Julius stood at second. Gomez fired his helmet and hat to the ground to earn the ejection.
