SALEM, VA (JULY 17, 2010) - After nearly blowing a six-run lead, the Red Sox turned back a late Dash rally to beat Winston-Salem 10-9 on a long and wild night at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Seth Loman bounced into a double play in the ninth inning with the tying run at third base to end the game and send Salem to the series victory.

The Dash (12-10, 55-37) jumped out to a 3-0 lead off Miguel Gonzalez in the first inning. Loman, Jose Martinez, and Luis Sierra each knocked in runs to help Winston get off to a fast start.

The Red Sox (11-11, 53-39) also got to work quickly against Joe Serafin, who was making his second start with the Dash. Mitch Dening tripled and scored on a groundout, while Will Middlebrooks hit a solo home run to make it 3-2 Winston after the first inning.

Salem scored two more off Serafin (0-2) in the second on an Alex Hassan homer and an RBI single by Dening, giving the home team a 4-3 lead. The Red Sox added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go on top 6-3.

After Winston tallied a run in the sixth to cut its deficit to two, Salem went to work against new Dash pitcher Drew O'Neil in the bottom of the inning. Nine batters came to the plate in the frame and four scored on four hits, a walk, an error, and a wild pitch. The Red Sox had blown the game open with a seemingly insurmountable 10-4 lead.

The Dash started its rally by collecting a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Sierra. Winston-Salem loaded the bases with two outs, but Pat Ryan came out of the bullpen to strike out Kyle Shelton and end the inning.

The eighth inning provided more fireworks for the Dash offense. With two outs, Jon Gilmore hit an RBI double to right field, cutting the Salem lead to 10-6. After Loman reached on an error, Jose Martinez doubled home Gilmore, ending the night for Ryan.

Cesar Cabral came in and immediately surrendered a two-run single to Sierra, making it a one-run game. Jordan Cheatham and Shelton followed with singles to load the bases, but Cabral struck out Mike Richard looking on a 3-2 pitch to preserve the slim Red Sox lead.

After Hector Santiago and Tyson Corley worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Dash offense got back to work in the ninth inning. Brandon Short singled to the shortstop and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Gilmore hit a sharp grounder up the middle, but second baseman Oscar Tejeda made a diving stop to keep the ball on the infield. Gilmore was safe at first, but the play prevented Short from scoring the trying run.

With men at the corners and one out, Loman came to the plate looking to be the hero. He had reached base in all five of his previous at bats, stroking four hits and reaching on an error. Loman swung at the first pitch and bounced a chopper back to Cabral, who proceeded to start a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

Gonzalez (3-2) picked up the win with five innings of work, allowing three unearned runs on nine hits. Serafin suffered his second straight defeat after giving up six runs on seven hits in five innings. Cabral earned his third save despite allowing five hits in 1.1 innings.

The Dash set a new season-high with 23 hits, but left 13 men on base; they left the bases loaded in both the seventh and eighth innings. Every Winston-Salem player had at least one hit, with seven posting multi-hit games. Loman and Shelton each had four hits, while Sierra and Gilmore had three hits apiece.

The contest was the longest nine-inning game this season for Winston, clocking in at 3:26.

After a scheduled day off on Sunday, the Dash will continue its road trip on Monday with a three-game series against the Kinston Indians. RHP Stephen Sauer (5-6, 4.80) goes for Winston against LHP T.J. House (2-7, 3.96). First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the audio broadcast beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, July 22 for a series against the Potomac Nationals.
