July 17, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

On a historic night at Pfitnzer Stadium, the P-Nats defeated Kinston 6-3. History was made after the top half of the seventh, when owner Art Silber's No. 42 was unveiled just right of the million-dollar video board on the left-center field wall. The Nationals benefited from home runs by Jose Lozada and Bill Rhinehart, as well as a solid six-inning effort from Brad Peacock, who struck out eight for the win.

Neither team got a base runner in the first two frames. With two outs and no one on in the third against K-Tribe starter Joey Mahalic, Potomac got a double from Lozada and a single from Josh Johnson. The Johnson single plated Lozada to give the P-Nats a 1-0 lead. Kinston tied it up 1-1 on an RBI-single from Jeremie Tice in the top of the fourth.

However, on a hot summer night, the ball was carrying well and the Nationals struck for two in the bottom half of the fourth. Derek Norris and Tyler Moore each hit doubles off the wall with Moore's hit scoring Norris, enabling the P-Nats to regain the lead 2-1. Rhinehart belted a single which scored Moore to increase the lead to 3-1.

Kinston got one back in the top of the fifth on Donnie Webb's third homer of the year. But in the bottom half, Potomac got a solo shot of their own -- Lozada hit his third home run of the year. That was Mahalic's last inning. He allowed a total of four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The P-Nats struck again in the sixth off Kinston's David Roberts. Rhinehart hit a lead-off shot way over the third level of advertisements in right-center field to extend the lead to 5-2. Potomac scored again in the same inning on a Lozada RBI-double that scored Sean Rooney to make it 6-2.

After Kinston put one on the board in the top of the seventh, play was stopped for a surpise ceremony. On his 70th birthday and bobblehead night, owner and first base coach Art Silber was honored on the field. His son Seth and Major League Baseball Vice President of Baseball Operations Jimmy Lee Solomon each gave speeches. Then, a "42" was unveiled in left-center to commemorate the owner and his boyhood idol, Jackie Robinson. It was officially a nine-minute delay.

Zach Dials threw a scoreless eighth, striking out two for Potomac and Dan Leatherman was once again lights out in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

After dropping seven of their first nine this season to Kinston, Potomac won the last three of the series to improve their record to 12-9 in the second half. Kinston falls to 8-13.

Lozada led the way for the P-Nats, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a home run, two runs and two RBI. Rhinehart had a 3-for-4 night with two RBI and a homer.

The Nationals have tomorrow off. They resume play Monday at 7:03 p.m. against the Salem Red Sox. Potomac sends right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, who is making his fourth rehab start for the P-Nats, against Brock Huntzinger for the Red Sox.
