Potomac handed Kinston their third straight loss, a 6-3 defeat Saturday night in Woodbridge, VA.
It was a pitcher's duel early as Potomac starter Brad Peacock struck out five K-Tribe batters through the first three scoreless innings. Kinston starter Joey Mahalic retired the first eight batters he faced until Jose Lozada doubled with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. The first hit of the game was followed with the first run when Josh Johnson followed with an RBI single.
Kinston would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning when a Chun Chen double was followed by an RBI hit from Jeremie Tice. Potomac would come right back in the bottom of the frame with a lead-off double from Derek Norris. Norris would then score when Tyler Moore followed with a double of his own. Moore then made the score 3-1 thanks to an RBI single by the next batter Bill Rhinehart. Kinston would cut the lead to one with a solo home run from Donnie Webb in the top of the fifth inning. The line drive shot over the right field wall was Webb's third home run of the season.
Potomac started to pull away in the bottom of the fifth inning on a lead-off home run from Jose Lozada. Mahalic got two more outs in the inning and was then pulled in favor of Kinston reliever Dave Roberts. Mahalic (3-5) picked up the loss, lasting 4 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. He walked one and struck out two. After Roberts got out of the fifth he ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning when Rhinehart led off with a solo home run. Sean Rooney then followed with a single and scored on a two-out double by Lozada.
Trailing 6-2 in the top of the seventh, Kinston responded with a two-out rally. Webb started things with a double. Ron Rivas drove him home with an RBI single.
