Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
MIDLAND - Tyler Marincov belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning Sunday night as the RockHounds pushed past the Hooks 6-3 in the series opener at Security Bank Ballpark.
Corpus Christi (11-12, 58-35) has lost four in a row for the first time since being swept by Midland (16-7, 49-44) April 25-28 at Whataburger Field.
With the Hooks ahead 3-2 in the home fourth, the RockHounds loaded the bases with no outs against Keegan Yuhl (8-3). J.P. Sportman ripped a line drive to Nolan Fontana a shortstop. Fontana knocked the ball down and fired to home plate, starting a 6-2-5 double play. Beau Taylor then cracked a base hit into right, scoring Brett Vertigan to level the score at 3. Marincov was next and deposited a 1-0 pitched onto the berm in left field.
Corpus Christi established an early lead against Corey Walter and Andres Avila. With two away in the second, Chase McDonald notched a solo home run down the right field line. His 13th dinger of the year made it a 1-1 game.
In the third, the Hooks loaded the bases thanks to a James Ramsay double and two walks. J.D. Davis cashed in with a line drive into left field, staking Corpus Christi to a 3-1 lead.
Trey Cochran-Gil (4-3), Kyle Finnegan and Bobby Wahl teamed to blank the Hooks over the final seven innings. Wahl struck out two in the ninth for his sixth save.
Ryan Thompson relieved Yuhl with four shutout frames.
The series continues Monday night with lefty Kent Emanuel (2-0, 4.50) on the mound for Corpus Christi. Midland sends Daniel Gossett (2-3, 3.40). First pitch 6:30. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
