In the Light of the Moon, the Naturals Win in Extras
July 17, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
TULSA, Okla. - Sometimes, all one needs is a little Moon-light. With the game tied at 2-2 in the 11th inning, Logan Moon, struck an 0-2 pitch from left-handed reliever, Jordan Schafer, and lined the offer over the 330-foot marker over the left-field wall to give the Naturals a 3-2 lead. Eric Stout and Mark Peterson preserved the advantage in the home half the frame and notched a series opening win, 3-2, over the Tulsa Drillers on Sunday night at ONEOK Field.
The Blue Springs, Mo. native recorded his third home run of the season - a career-high - with his latest trumping his previously believed biggest home run of his career. A week to the date, Moon struck a game-tying three-run home run into left field on the road at Frisco to force extra innings. This big fly gave his team the win.
Northwest Arkansas (43-50/14-9) generated all the offense via the long ball. Corey Toups opened the fourth inning with a solo home run off Drillers' starter, Chase De Jong, who was denied his league-leading 10th win for his second straight start, to give the Naturals a 1-0 lead.
After the Drillers tied the game in the bottom off the fourth inning, the 1-1 dead lock held until Mauricio Ramos clubbed his sixth home run of the season to break the tie again in the seventh frame. But again, Tulsa responded and tied the game back up at 2-2.
Following the five-inning start in his Double-A debut by right-hander, Josh Staumont, right-hander, Evan Beal, worked the sixth and seventh inning and allowed a run on three hits; but kept the Naturals in the game. Aroni Nina worked 2.0 innings following Beal, before he turned things over to Stout for the 10th.
The left-hander, Stout (4-3), worked around trouble in the home half of the 10th inning and notched the first two outs of the 11th, getting a double-play ball on a failed sacrifice bunt by Alex Verdugo. Catcher, Cam Gallagher, fired the ball bunted in front of the plate to second for the force and the relay through from Humberto Arteaga completed the Naturals' fourth turned double play on the night. Peterson struck out Jacob Scavuzzo for the final out of the game.
The Naturals extended their advantage to a 1.5 games over the Drillers (49-42/12-10) for first place in the second half North Division standings tonight and look to take Game 2 on Monday night at ONEOK Field.
Left-hander, Eric Skoglund (6-6, 3.49) will make his 11th start on the season and his fifth this year against Tulsa. The 23-year old southpaw has posted a 1.64 with a 3-1 record against the Drillers in his previous four starts. Countering for Tulsa is right-hander, Lisalverto Bonilla (0-1, 2.95) and he will make his second start against the Naturals on Monday night.
